The town was established in 1791 when Samuel Rice moved to the area from Connecticut. He served in the war of the revolution for six months and later bought land in New Hampshire. He later donated a piece of land for the cemetery and the town square. His son, Myron S. Curtis, later became a famous athlete, and the town was named after him. Addison's historical society was founded in 1883, so it was only fitting that the town's first white man sign was erected by Mr. Rice.
