Start With the Facility, Not the Equipment

A useful security review begins by identifying the areas and events that matter to the business.

Potential areas can include:

  • Production areas
  • Server and network rooms
  • Records storage
  • Emergency exits

“We need another camera” is a proposed purchase.

“We need to determine who enters the equipment room after hours” is a business requirement.

The second statement gives a security provider something useful to design around. It leaves room to consider video, access records, entry controls, alerts, lighting, door hardware, procedures, or a combination of measures.

It also reduces the chance of buying equipment before understanding the problem it is expected to solve.

The Main Components of a Commercial Security System

A commercial security system can bring several capabilities together, but each component should have a defined purpose within the facility.

Video Security

Commercial security cameras help businesses observe activity, review incidents, and preserve visual evidence.

The appropriate design depends on what the camera needs to show. Capturing general activity in a parking lot is different from identifying a person at an entrance or reading a license plate at a vehicle access point.

Placement is only one consideration. Businesses should also determine:

  • Who is authorized to view footage
  • How quickly footage can be searched
  • How long recordings are retained
  • Whether footage can be exported when needed
  • What happens if a camera stops recording

More footage is not automatically better. Each camera should have a defined business purpose.

A live image also does not prove that yesterday’s footage was recorded, retained, or easy to retrieve. Recorded video should be tested under the conditions that matter for that location. Those conditions may include nighttime lighting, glare, weather, busy entrances, distant vehicles, or obstructions that are not obvious during installation.

The goal is not simply to confirm that the camera is online. The goal is to determine whether an authorized person could answer the intended question using the footage.

Controlled entry must preserve safe exit. OSHA’s exit-route requirements generally require employees to be able to open exit-route doors from inside without keys, tools, or special knowledge. Door and locking changes should be evaluated by qualified professionals against applicable fire, building, accessibility, and life-safety requirements.

Alarms, Alerts, and Sensors

A camera can record an event without bringing it to anyone’s attention.

Depending on the system, alarms and sensors may detect:
